![]() Why Convert to Compressed Natural GasWith the meteoric rise of oil prices in recent months, many Americans are now actively looking for ways to curb their fuel expenses. Some cut back their fuel expenditures by using their vehicles less and resorting to walking or cycling to run errands or get to work. Suddenly mopeds are nothing to joke about anymore. Others who are not that lucky end up selling their cars to make ends meet. But it doesn’t have to reach this extreme situation of people giving up their cars because they can’t afford to drive them anymore. There are now several options that Americans can consider that can help solve the problem of high fuel prices. One of these options is to switch from expensive gasoline or diesel to less expensive natural gas, specifically compressed natural gas or CNG Switching from gasoline/diesel to compressed natural gas can be accomplished in two ways. One way is to purchase a natural gas vehicle; another is to retrofit an existing vehicle for it to run on both gasoline and CNG. Either of the two has both pros and cons. Buying a new NGV, for instance, can be a little difficult since there is only one passenger car model available that runs on CNG – the Honda Civic. Unfortunately though, the Honda Civic GX has very limited availability. Only roughly 1,100 units are manufactured and sold every year. On the other hand, the government encourages the purchase of natural gas vehicles by offering tax credits. Meanwhile, another doable and practical way to switch to compressed natural gas is to convert an existing vehicle into a bi-fuel system. This can be done by installing a CNG conversion kit. Retrofitting an existing vehicle with a CNG kit can be expensive. However, the initial investment can be recouped with savings on fuel and maintenance costs. CNG costs much less than gasoline and is a much cleaner burning fuel. This results to a more efficient engine with longer periods between regular maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, parts replacements and oil changes.
